Khardung La Pass
At 5,359 meters, Khardung La is the highest motorable road in the world. A sign which greets visitors upon arriving there proclaims it with a hint of pride. The realization that one is traversing through the highest motorable road is in itself as exciting as it gets.

Khardung La is a high altitude mountain pass located almost 40 kilometers from Leh, and is the gateway to Shyok & Nubra Valleys. It has an enormous strategic importance for India, as it is used to transport supplies to the Siachen Glacier.

The Khardung La Pass, a major tourist place in Ladakh, is maintained by the Border Roads Organisation and all kinds of vehicles, from two wheelers to heavy trucks, ply this road.

Nubra Valley

Nubra Valley lies in the union territory of Ladakh at a distance of around 140 Km from Leh. Located on the ancient Silk Route, the valley has Shyok and Nubra rivers snaking through it and some beautiful monasteries.
With arid mountains in the backdrop, Hundar in Nubra Valley is famous for the Bactrian camel rides. Bactrian camels are of the rarest sort, having two humps and were the primary source of transportation in the silk route. Diskit Monastery in Nubra Valley is known for the 32 metre Maitreya Buddha statue located near the monastery. There are a lot of activities like ATV rides and ziplining in the Nubra Valley.

The region is currently under military supervision because the road further leads to the Siachen base camp, which happens to be the highest battlefield in the world. Most tourists travel to Nubra Valley from Leh through Khardung La.

Diskit Monastery

Diskit Monastery is a major tourist attraction in the Nubra Valley, not just for its incredible location, but for the 106 feet Maitreya Buddha statue which is located just below the monastery.

Diskit Monastery in Nubra Valley is situated at an altitude of 10,308 feet, 15 kilometers northwest off the Khalsar-Panakil route, right at the edge of the desert in the Nubra Valley. It stands atop a hill at the edge of a road, which links Partharpur & Those.

Things to see in the Diskit Monastery

The interiors of the Diskit Monastery are as beautiful as its exteriors, as they are adorned with intricate frescoes & wall paintings. The prayer hall, called Dukhang, is home to enormous drums & beautiful images of the Buddhist guardian deities.

Hunder

They are famous because of their white rolling sands, with a river flowing close by, trees & snow-capped mountains in the distance.

It is unbelievable, when one thinks of it, that a desert could exist at so high an altitude! Equally surprising is the sight of the double humped Bactrian camels, whose two humps enable them to develop resistance to cold, drought & high altitudes.

Taking a ride on these double humped camels which gently make their way among the white sand dunes, with poplar trees dotting the landscape & the pleasing murmur of the River Shyok flowing nearby, it all makes for a memorable experience. At 5,359 meters, Khardung La is the highest motorable road in the world.
